FAO with the assistance of INFOSAMAK and the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Sultanate of Oman and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) co-organized a regional 4 day workshop under the theme: “The Near East and North Africa Regional Consultation: Towards the Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, which was held in Muscat – Oman during the period from 7 through 10 December, 2015. It was attended by 40 participants representing governments, academia, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and regional and international organizations, civil society organization (CSOs), coming from 12 countries in the Near East and North Africa region.
The main objective of the workshop was to increase the fishers and all the relevant actors knowledge concerning the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, as well as encouraging their commitment, partnership and involvement in the use and implementation of SSF guidelines in their communities. The workshop was also a good opportunity for sharing the various experiences relating to the different actors in terms of governance of their fisheries.
