The project has duration of 4 years. The project envisages supporting the artisanal and small-scale fisheries sectors in the three benefiting countries, namely: Djibouti, Morocco and Yemen; through provision of technical advisory and marketing support to ensure sustainable development and sound exploitation of their fisheries resources. The project will also boost technical cooperation within the three countries as well as other countries in the Arab Region.
The project will attempt to sensitize fishermen on hygienic conditions of fish handling on board, at fish auction and during transportation, so that products will reach the processor or the final consumer in good quality. The project will also assist fishermen cooperatives and processing plants in the development of value-added seafood products to be marketed both in the domestic (for Djibouti) and foreign market (For Morocco and Yemen). It will also help these benefiting cooperatives and companies in finding financial resources to undergo the investments needed and therefore to develop their business.
The participation of Morocco, who has a strong experience in fisheries related fields, will enable a south-south cooperation for the benefit of Least Developed countries such as Djibouti and Yemen.
