Workshop on Ecolabelling and Fisheries Sustainability in Morocco

Fisheries play an important role in the economy of Morocco. Fish processing for export from Morocco represents a significant source of export earnings and employment. Morocco has endorsed the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) as the pillar for its recently adopted fisheries management strategy “Stratégie Halieutis”, including the promotion of eco-labelling based on the FAO Guidelines for Eco-labelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries; emerging issues such as the use of eco-labels and private standards are also creating opportunities and challenges for Moroccan seafood exporters.

In this respect, FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Morocco and INFOSAMAK Centre organized a workshop on “Ecolabelling and Fisheries sustainability in Morocco” which took place in Marrakech, Morocco during the period 1-3 December 2010. Participants have been selected based on their knowledge and involvement in the fisheries sector, particularly as it relates to fisheries exploitation, management and utilization. The organizers called on international experts reputed for their sound expertise as regards to fisheries Ecolabelling.
