Niger adopted, on Friday 26 June, a national strategy for the sustainable development of Aquaculture and its action plan (SNDDA-2020-2035), as local media reported.
This strategy was adopted at a Ministerial Council chaired by the Head of State, Issoufou Mahamadou, according to the Niger Press Agency.
The final press release published at the end of this Council meeting recalls that "Niger's economy is essentially based on the primary sector, in particular agriculture and livestock farming, on which more than 80% of the population depends.
Highlighting the government's intention to create the conditions to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2: "Zero Hunger", the statement states that "aquaculture could be one of the opportunities" to achieve this goal.
It also states that "the National Strategy for the Sustainable Development of Aquaculture in Niger is based on the current realities and prospects for sustainable development of the national economy.
"A sustainable and competitive aquaculture sub-sector that contributes to food and nutritional sovereignty and the creation of decent jobs for young Nigeriens by 2035" remains the vision of this strategy, according to the press release.
The strategy focuses on four priorities which are to ensure attractive legal, regulatory, institutional and fiscal conditions for domestic and foreign investment, to strengthen the physical and organizational factors of aquaculture production, to promote aquaculture fish value chains, and to develop human capital in aquaculture and its value chains, ABS says.
