![]() 21/11/2019 World Fisheries Day is celebrated every year on 21 November throughout the fishing communities holding rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural programs and exhibition to highlight the importance of maintaining the World's fisheries. The day helps in highlighting the importance of lives of water creatures to humans. Department of Fisheries organized a function to celebrate this Day in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Giriraj Singh said, there is a tremendous amount of opportunities in the fisheries sector. He said, the annual production of fisheries has reached up to 13 million metric tonnes and the Ministry is working on achieving target of 20 million metric tonne in the next five years. He said, policies are expected to be framed to prevent fishes from diseases and to put a check on fishing by outsiders in the limit of 200 nautical miles from Indian coasts. Mr Singh also gave away Fisheries Awards to the fish farmers for their exemplary contribution in the sector. Ministers of State in Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Ministry, Sanjeev Balyan and Pratap Chandra Sarangi were also present during the event. |
