Algeria: Creation of an agency to manage coral exploitation

04/11/2019 A national agency in charge of the management and exploitation of coral has been created "about twenty days ago", a senior official of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries announced in Algiers.

Speaking on national radio, the Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry, Taha Hamouche, explained that the establishment of this new agency was aimed at the best possible management of coral exploitation, the opening of which, decided in 2015 by the authorities, is "imminent", without specifying the deadline.

Algeria has granted itself this year a quota of 1,455 tons of red tuna, fished in 20 days instead of 30 days of the season," he said, adding that this quantity will reach 1,655 tons in 2020 to finally reach 2,000 tons in the future.

This request for an increase in its bluefin tuna quota will be made by Algeria at the next meeting of the international tuna management body, scheduled for the end of November in Madrid.

In order to do so, it is necessary to train Algerian fishermen and to set up a fleet capable of fetching these resources on the high seas and at great depths.

Regarding the permanent rise in the price of sardines, Hamouche said it reflected an "imbalance" between supply and demand, adding that "the solution is to boost the production of freshwater fish."
