Aquaculture: Souss-Massa region is willing to become a pioneer at the national level 04/09/2019 Two agreements relating to the development of aquaculture projects in the Souss-Massa region were approved at the regular session of the Regional Council held recently, which provide financial and material support for young project holders. These two conventions are the result of a partnership with the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA). At the end of the selection process, 23 projects were selected to mark the start of aquaculture development in this region. These projects, which will operate 60 production units, for a projected investment of about 400 million dirhams, consider the exploitation of 900 ha and produce about 62,000 tons / year of sea shells and seaweed, ie 78% of the forecasts of the aquaculture plan estimated at 80,000 tons / year. These new projects will contribute to the creation of 620 direct jobs in the region. Among these selected projects, 3 are supported by 11 young entrepreneurs who have taken the path of investment in aquaculture activity in this region. Other opportunities are also reserved for local small scale fishing cooperatives interested in aquaculture as a source of growth by making this program a real lever for integration and local development. Special attention is given to this category, which will be the subject of supervision and technical support program for the realization of these aquaculture projects under the best conditions. It should be noted that several areas have been identified as potential to host aquaculture projects in Souss-Massa region. This region has, in fact, important assets and potentialities to promote sustainable development of aquaculture activity. The areas identified for carrying out aquaculture activities in the region are spread over four zones covering an area of 4,110 ha, intended for shellfish farming, fish farming and seaweed farming. It should be recalled that since the start of the Halieutis strategy implementation, the priority actions needed to create a favorable environment for the initiation of the development of aquaculture on a scientific, technical, solid basis and inspired by the best international practices in this field were conducted. These actions have highlighted the considerable potential of the Kingdom different regions to turn them into real development and integration poles. This observation is largely confirmed by the aquaculture planning, carried out on more than 1,700 km of the national littoral, whose process made it possible to identify the spaces favorable to marine aquaculture in all its components, and to draw up the typology of an offer aquaculture and provide viable and credible investment opportunities.
