Exports Frozen Mackerel: Norway
Norwegian exports of frozen mackerel in the first 3 months of this year showed a similarly slow start to the year as in 2007, with only 24200 tonnes compared with 24500 tonnes for the same period of 2007. Full year figures for 2007 were 339000 tonnes.

Herring Market Report - April 2008 [April 2008]

Stronger European herring supplies are reflected in increased round sales to African markets and higher fillet sales to East Europe during the first quarter of 2008.

An exception to the conventional picture of developing countries supplying seafood to developed country markets is found in the herring industry where large volumes are sold by developed countries for consumption in developing countries. This latter trend is illustrated in figures for first quarter Norwegian herring exports which show strong increases in frozen round sales to Africa as well as increases in fillet exports to East Europe.

Stronger supplies and weaker prices for 2008 ?
Notwithstanding a drop in the EU herring quota, an almost 20% increase in the ‘spring spawning’ quota points to increased supplies for European markets for 2008. In this context, prices may be expected to weaken. There remain some uncertainties regarding the Russian market including proposed restrictions on Norwegian exporters as well as current stock levels of frozen product

The Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group has just entered the formal process of assessment for Western Mackerel fisheries against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard. If approved, the fishery will be the first major pelagic tank vessel fishery in the world to be certified as well-managed and sustainable.

Fish Info Network Directors meet at Conxemar, Vigo
In October each year the Spanish Association of Wholesalers, Importers, Manufacturers and Exporters of Fish products and Aquaculture (Conxemar) organizes the International Frozen Seafood Exhibition in Vigo, Spain.

Back to back with this event Conxemar jointly holds an international conference together with FAO. This year the conference was dedicated to cephalopods, a group of molluscs that includes squids, cuttlefishes, and octopus. The conference also provides the backdrop for various side events such as the Vigo dialogue on decent work in fisheries and aquaculture, and the meeting of the Fish Info Network (FIN).
