Seabass and Seabream Market Report - May 2007 [May 2007]

General trends
The global production of farmed European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) approached 200 000 tonnes in 2006. Provisional figures report an output of 87 000 to 104 000 tonnes of seabream and of 88 500 tonnes of seabass. Greece remains the main producer of both species, followed by Turkey, Spain and by Italy at a distance.

General trends
Good international demand and increasing prices were the main features of the EU seabass and seabream market between January and September 2006. However, from September onwards, with the new generation fish reaching the marketable size of 350-400 gr, the increased supply could not be absorbed by demand anymore, hence the gradual decline of prices.

Fish Info Network Directors meet at Conxemar, Vigo
In October each year the Spanish Association of Wholesalers, Importers, Manufacturers and Exporters of Fish products and Aquaculture (Conxemar) organizes the International Frozen Seafood Exhibition in Vigo, Spain.

Back to back with this event Conxemar jointly holds an international conference together with FAO. This year the conference was dedicated to cephalopods, a group of molluscs that includes squids, cuttlefishes, and octopus. The conference also provides the backdrop for various side events such as the Vigo dialogue on decent work in fisheries and aquaculture, and the meeting of the Fish Info Network (FIN).
